This year, some 20 million pilgrims performed Ziyarat-e-Arba’een including about 600 thousand visitors from Arabic and foreign countries (more than 60 countries in the world), including (Iran, Bahrain, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Yemen, Lebanon, Syria, Algeria, Tunisia, Mauritania, Turkey, Russia, Azerbaijan, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Tanzania, Belgium, Australia , Denmark, Senegal, Philippines, Georgia, Canada, Norway, Zambia, Niger, Nigeria, Myanmar, China, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Sri Lanka, Cameron,, Madagascar, South Africa, Sweden, Britain and other countries).
Thousand of Iraqis and non-Iraqis walked from Najaf to Karbala for the love of Imam Hussain (as). 1,400 years ago, Imam Hussain (as) also walked the route of Najaf to Karbala to establish justice and fight injustice.
Recitation of elegies, marsiyahs and prayer could be heard echoing through the streets as people marched with flags in the air. The Iraqi defence and interior ministries deployed 35,000 security forces to secure the roads for the pilgrims around Karbala.
‘I have been walking for 12 days,’ said one devotee from Iraq’s southern city of Basra. ‘Despite the threats and the exhaustion, we insist on taking part in these commemorations.’
